Sir Vassel Johnson - A Life Remembered

Widely regarded as the architect of the Cayman Islands financial industry and the first Caymanian to be knighted, Sir Vassel Godfrey Johnson has been praised for his “remarkable vision” and “economic legacy”. Sir Vassel, as he was widely known, passed away the evening of Wednesday, 12 November at the age of 86. He was born in Jamaica on 18 January 1922 and arrived in the Cayman Islands

Police End Henderson Investigation

In a late-Friday (14 November) statement, Acting Police Commissioner David George announced the end of misconduct investigations against Grand Court Judge Alexander Henderson, citing a late-October court judgement and advice from the Attorney General. The investigation would be “immediately discontinued”, Mr George said, and all charges would be dropped.

Debt Moratorium for Sister Islands

Sister Islands residents won’t have to make loan or mortgage payments for the next six months as they recover from Hurricane Paloma, the Cayman Islands’ seven commercial clearing banks have agreed. Leader of Government Business Hon Kurt Tibbetts made the announcement on Thursday, 13 November, at the weekly Cabinet press briefing. Warner Southern Helps Out ICCI

Cayman Airways delivered another donation of books to the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) on Thursday, 30 October. This is the second donation from Warner Southern University located in Lake Wales, Florida. “We are very grateful to Warner Southern University and to Rotary Central for their assistance in helping to restock our library,” said Scott Cummings, Dean of the ICCI.

George Town-born Shantel Ebanks is the Galleria Store Supervisor for Cable & Wireless (now called LIME). She likes to dance and has performed with the Cayman National Dance Company. She currently dances with the Kri Performing Arts School dance troupe. The things that she likes most about life in Cayman are that Cayman is “a close-knit community and the beach is never far away.”
